Being SunSmart

A crowd of people at a Race for Life eventStay safe in the sun

When the good weather starts, it’s a perfect excuse to get outdoors and get active. But while you’re burning off calories walking or running, make sure you also protect your skin too.

Reduce your risk

The strength of ultraviolet (UV) rays outdoors varies from day to day and according to the time of year. Your sunburn risk depends on the strength of UV rays and your skin type.

If you’re exercising outdoors on sunny days, try to keep your shoulders covered with cool, loose clothing like a t-shirt, and wear a hat and sunglasses. Use sunscreen (SPF15+) on any skin that’s not covered.

Try to plan your Race for Life training schedule to avoid being out for long periods in summer during the hours around midday.

If you are out in the sun, make sure your skin is well protected and don’t forget to drink plenty of water to re-hydrate.
